Kayla Shults is a junior journalism major and international studies minor who first discovered her passion for journalism as a child watching the television show Gilmore Girls. After the main character Rory declared her admiration for foreign correspondent Christiane Amanpour, Kayla discovered that there was a job that could combine her love for writing and seeing the world.
She knew the Stony Brook School of Journalism was the right fit for her after touring the newsroom as a high school junior. The Port Jefferson Station native found a place close to home and close to Manhattan, the world’s epicenter for journalism.
Kayla is on the broadcast track and figured out that she wanted to work either in front of or behind the cameras after anchoring Stony Brook Newsbreak. She was an associate producer for the School of Journalism’s Roth Regatta Live, an anchor for Wolfstock Live and is currently a contributor on the WUSB News at Noon with her own segment, The Hollywood Hookup, and works as the news editor for the Stony Brook Independent.
She just finished her internship with thecelebritycafe.com, in which she wrote nearly 100 stories throughout the summer.
