Julio Avila is a Long Island native from Huntington. He is currently a senior journalism major on the broadcast track at Stony Brook University. The convenient commute via the Long Island Rail Road and all the School of Journalism had to offer is why he chose Stony Brook University. He transferred to SBU after completing his first few years of school at Suffolk County Community College.
His interest in journalism started when he was young. His parents were, and still are, avid newswatchers – Univision being his family’s preferred choice. Julio appreciates journalism for the vast learning opportunities he can take from reading, listening and watching stories of various topics such as current events, politics, science and entertainment. His parents are immigrants from Peru and speak Spanish to Julio, hence his fluency in Spanish. He has visited his family in Peru once and thought his second international trip would be to Peru again, not to Cuba for the School of Journalism’s Journalism Without Walls, winter 2016 trip.
Julio is a staff writer for the Stony Brook Independent, co-hosts the Independent’s WUSB-radio news/talk show, “In Focus”, did newsgathering and anchored the School of Journalism’s “Newsbreak en Espanol,” interned at The Long Islander, and will intern at NPR affiliate station WSHU.
